When late summer bathes the Tyrolean mountains in golden light, one of the most festive traditions of the year takes place in our valleys: the Almabtrieb (traditional cattle drive). The ringing of cowbells, festively decorated cows, and live folk music announce the safe return of the herds from high alpine pastures.
A very special highlight awaits you on Sunday, September 13th, 2026: The traditional Almabtrieb at Hotel Restaurant Hauserwirt right here in Münster, Tyrol!

What is the “Aufkränzen” Tradition?
The Almabtrieb is much more than folklore – it is a centuries-old celebration of thanksgiving by local farmers, herders, and alpine dairymen. When the herd has spent the summer grazing on high pastures without accident, sickness, or severe storms, the animals are proudly adorned (“aufgekränzt”) for their journey back down into the valley.
Intricate headdresses and floral crowns are handcrafted over several days using alpine flowers, dwarf pine twigs, ribbons, and sparkling tinsel. Small mirrors are traditionally woven into the wreaths – according to ancient folklore, they ward off evil spirits along the mountain paths. When the proud lead cow (“Kranzkuh”) leads the herd with her bell, goosebumps are guaranteed.
